Center for Critical Care Services

Cooper has earned the distinguished reputation as the critical care provider to the region’s most seriously ill. The center has a state-of-the-art intensive care unit and an acclaimed clinical research program. More than 40 percent of inter-hospital transfers from South Jersey are directed here through the Cooper Transfer Center, which streamlines air and land transfers to Cooper from outlying hospitals.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

A design showcase for patient- and family-centered care, the Dr. Edward D. Viner Intensive Care Unit at Cooper University Hospital is an acknowledged center of excellence in the Delaware Valley. With the latest in advanced imaging and invasive monitoring equipment, the 25,000-square-foot, 30-bed, state-of-the-art unit allows 360-degree patient access. Five patient rooms are capable of negative pressure isolation, and five rooms have chambered isolation alcoves. In addition, an enlarged room with operating room-caliber lighting is outfitted to perform bedside exploratory laparotomy in patients who are too unstable for transport to the operating room.

Cooper Center for Urgent and Emergent Services

Cooper Center for Urgent and Emergent Services includes the Cooper Emergency Department (ED), Urgent Care Centers, 911 Emergency Medical Services, Air Medical Services, and the Cooper Transfer Center.

Cooper’s ED in Camden handles more than 80,000 visits annually, and Cooper’s comprehensive Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support EMS averages more than 110 ambulance runs per day. Cooper Air Medical Transport services the seven counties of southern New Jersey.

Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Cooper utilizes PACS (picture archiving and communication system) to provide state-of-the-art medical imaging services. PACS is a filmless and paperless system available online via Cooper’s intranet or the Internet. All referring physicians have access to voice recognition and self-editing for all reports.

In addition to PACS, Cooper provides superior diagnostic technology including 64-slice CT, digital X-ray, CR and fluoroscopy, US, MRI, PET/CT and bone densitometer. Cooper offers digital mammography and other advanced breast imaging services, such as breast MRI, breast ultrasound, contrast-enhanced spectral mammography, and specialized image-guided biopsy procedures.

Children’s Regional Hospital

The Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper is the only state-designated acute care children’s hospital in southern New Jersey and the only children’s hospital in South Jersey to provide highly specialized medical and surgical care. Additional services include pediatric intensive care, intermediate care, pediatric surgery, and pediatric emergency care.

Cooper’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit treats the full range of medical and surgical problems in premature and term infants, offering privacy and comfort to mothers, babies, and families. The unit features a breastfeeding room, a “nesting” room, and a large waiting area for families.

Cooper Heart Institute

The Cooper Heart Institute is the most comprehensive and advanced cardiac care center in southern New Jersey, earning national recognition for its superior quality and world-renowned team of cardiovascular experts. The Cooper Heart Institute provides patients with access to state-of-the-art diagnostic testing, comprehensive preventive care, arrhythmia management, advanced heart failure management, and innovative surgical and non-surgical treatment options.

The Cooper Heart Institute is at the forefront of percutaneous and minimally invasive surgical techniques and has the largest volume of cardiothoracic surgery in the region. It is also at the leading edge of ablation therapy, device implantation, and arrhythmia detection, performing thousands of complex procedures each year.

Most recently, Cooper University Health Care and Inspira Health Network integrated the cardiac service lines from both organizations to form a new collaborative called Cardiac Partners at Cooper and Inspira. The affiliation provides patients in the South Jersey region with access to more coordinated and comprehensive cardiac services across the continuum of care from diagnosis to minimally invasive procedures, advanced cardiac surgery, and cardiac rehab. The combination of the two health systems’ cardiac service lines creates the largest program in South Jersey and includes more than 65 cardiac specialists.

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper

Cooper University Health Care and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center partnered in September 2013 to create MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. MD Anderson is one of the nation’s leading cancer centers.

Through this partnership, MD Anderson at Cooper physicians adhere to the philosophy, processes, and guidelines set by MD Anderson in Houston, TX, and patients receive the same proven treatment plans provided at MD Anderson. Patients have access to select clinical trials and a full range of supportive care services, including complementary medicine therapies, nutrition counseling, behavioral medicine, social services, palliative care, and genetic counseling and testing, providing complete care for our patients.

Women’s and Children’s Health Institute

The Women’s and Children’s Health Institute offers comprehensive services for women including obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. Cooper is one of only three centers in southern New Jersey to earn a designation as a Regional Perinatal Center by providing the highest level of both maternal-fetal medicine and neonatal care.

The Women’s and Children’s Health Institute houses The Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper and The Ripa Center for The Women’s Health and Wellness. Children’s Regional Hospital is South Jersey’s only state-designated children’s hospital with 27 medical and surgical specialties, making it the most comprehensive pediatric program in South Jersey. The Ripa Center for Women’s Health and Wellness at Cooper provides primary and multispecialty care focused on the unique health care needs of women.

Adult Health Institute

The Adult Health Institute (AHI) provides an extensive network of coordinated primary and specialty health care. Each member of the institute understands the importance of early diagnosis and treatment when managing disease. AHI primary care practitioners in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine administer preventive care and teach healthy lifestyles while also managing simple to complex illnesses for their patients. Adult Health Institute specialties include Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Geriatrics, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Psychiatry, and Pulmonary Medicine.

Cooper Bone and Joint Institute

The Cooper Bone and Joint Institute offers comprehensive orthopaedic treatment through a leading-edge approach to the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. Highly trained orthopaedic specialists work to develop a custom treatment plan in the areas of foot and ankle pain; hand and upper extremity disorders; orthopaedic trauma; joint reconstruction; comprehensive and multidisciplinary care of back, neck, and other spine problems; osteoporosis-related fragility fractures; and sports medicine.

Cooper Neurological Institute

Cooper Neurological Institute (CNI) is dedicated to treating patients with brain disorders such as cancers and tumors, vascular abnormalities, functional disorders and ocular disorders. CNI is the only neurological institute in central and southern New Jersey to offer patients both the CyberKnife® multisession stereotactic robotic radiotherapy and the Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon™.

The Cooper University Hospital Roberts Pavilion includes two leading-edge, dedicated neurosurgical operating rooms— one primarily for cranial procedures, and one primarily for spinal procedures. These ORs offer the newest image-guidance surgical technology as well as an intraoperative CT (iCT).

Cooper University Health Care has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers. The Gold Seal of Approval and the Heart-Check mark represent hospitals with the highest level of stroke care and are symbols of quality from their respective organizations. Cooper is the first in South Jersey to achieve this significant certification.

Digestive Health Institute

Cooper Digestive Health Institute is South Jersey’s largest free-standing endoscopic center, providing a full range of gastrointestinal services with satellite offices throughout the region, including the latest diagnostic procedures and treatments for disorders of the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, digestive tract, and related digestive issues. The institute features four advanced procedure rooms, eight preoperative and postoperative recovery areas, 10 patient exam rooms, and state-of-the-art imaging technology with the latest diagnostic and treatment options. Our resources include the latest advances including minimally invasive endoscopic equipment and testing. Our physician faculty is nationally recognized as providing a level of experience that is unmatched in South Jersey.

Education  Beyond the Hospital Walls

While much of your training will take place within Cooper University Hospital, you will have an opportunity to train in Cooper’s extensive network of outpatient facilities as well.

Services and programs at Cooper University Health Care at Voorhees include comprehensive women’s health care services and stereotactic breast biopsy, surgical specialties, cancer treatment services through MD Anderson at Cooper, pediatric and adult sleep studies, a full complement of diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine capabilities, a cleft palate and craniofacial program, plastic and reconstructive surgery, shoulder and hand surgery, and sports medicine.

MD Anderson at Cooper offers comfort and convenience to patients who receive ongoing treatment at several locations beyond our Camden and Voorhees locations. Likewise, specialists in the Cooper Bone and Joint Institute provide services at a number of outpatient locations, which are equipped with leading-edge technology to support the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.

Cooper’s Urgent Care Centers in the South Jersey suburbs are the only centers in the area that are staffed by emergency medicine physicians seven days a week.

Elective opportunities are available outside of CUHC with approval.
