Application Process
The Residency Program at Cooper University Health Care is an ACGME‑accredited, four‑year combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) program (ACGME Program Number: 3003300001).
Positions
- Two (2) PGY‑1 positions are offered each academic year
- Training begins July 1
Program Eligibility
The AP/CP Residency Program at Cooper University Hospital participates exclusively in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®). All application materials must be submitted through ERAS without exception.
- Applicants must participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)

- Program: Cooper Medical School of Rowan University / Cooper University Hospital
- Applicants must be:
- U.S. citizens, or
- U.S. permanent residents (resident aliens), or
- Eligible for J‑1 visa sponsorship only
- H‑1B visas are not sponsored
Application Requirements
To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Medical students in their final year (MS4) or graduates who have completed medical school within the past five years.
- Passing USMLE or COMLEX Step/Level 1 and Step/Level 2 scores are required.
- Passing on the first attempt is strongly preferred.
- Complete application submitted through ERAS, including all required supporting documents.
Application deadline:
October 31 (complete ERAS application required by this date)
Review and Interview Process
- All applications are screened by the Program Director or Associate Program Director.
- Interview invitations are sent by invitation only via ERAS and Thalamus.
- Invitations are extended on a rolling basis.
- Selected applicants will participate in a virtual interview with the Program Director, Associate Program Director, and selected faculty members.
- Following the interview, candidates will be invited to participate in a virtual open house discussion with current residents, including the Chief Residents. The Program Administrator will email additional details to confirmed candidates.
Application Procedures for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)
Foreign medical graduates applying for a PGY‑1 position must:
- Apply through ERAS, following all PGY‑1 ERAS requirements.
- Hold an ECFMG Interim Certificate or Standard Certificate.
- Submit official USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 results.
- Notification of passing scores alone is not sufficient.
- Participate in the NRMP, as required for all applicants.
Application Timeline
- October 15: Recommended submission of application and supporting documents.
- October–January: Rolling interview invitations and virtual interviews.
- July 1: Program start date (GME Orientation and Cooper University Health Care employment begin in mid‑June).
GME Open Houses
Graduate Medical Education (GME) hosts in‑person open houses for applicants to all residency and fellowship programs.
