The Infectious Diseases fellowship is a two-year program with an emphasis on clinical consultative infectious diseases. Clinical experience is gained in seeing patients with various infectious diseases or febrile illnesses in the medical and surgical ICUs, the trauma ICU, and general medical and surgical wards. The fellow develops expertise in the treatment of various infections in immunocompromised hosts and transplant patients. There is a microbiology laboratory rotation and the opportunity to gain expertise in infection control. The second year involves less consultative patient responsibility and more time for research projects, either lab-based or clinical. During both years, there is a continuity clinic where the fellow manages HIV-infected patients. Fellows rotate through outpatient ID Clinics during the fellowship, including General ID, STD and Tuberculosis Clinics. An elective rotation is available in pediatric infectious diseases.
