Message from Chief of Medicine

Message from the Chief of Med

Thank you for your interest in the Cooper University Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program. This is an exciting time to be entering the field of medicine, and an exciting time to become a part of Cooper Hospital.

We are located in Camden, New Jersey, minutes from downtown Philadelphia. The population provides an amazing variety of patients, including the underserved population of Camden as well as the more affluent suburban areas. Because we are the major university hospital center for all of southern New Jersey and the only Level 1 trauma center, patients are routinely flown to Cooper from other hospitals, giving our residents experience with a wide variety of critically ill patients. In addition, Cooper has a large network of outpatient offices throughout Camden County and beyond. This makes the outpatient and consulting experiences as varied and educational as the inpatient.

Cooper Hospital is in the midst of growth and change. Our new patient care pavilion opened in the fall of 2008 and doubled the space for inpatient care including a state-of-the-art emergency department and a world renowned intensive care unit.  We are excited about our new fully integrated inpatient Electronic Health Record, which was recently expanded to include the outpatient setting. Cooper has a tradition of being in the forefront of medical education, and we look forward to welcoming the inaugural class of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, the first  four-year allopathic medical school in southern New Jersey, in the fall of 2012.

The faculty in the Department of Medicine are innovative teachers and are committed to the educational experience of the housestaff.   We have award-winning teaching attendings in general medicine and many of our subspecialists are nationally and even world-renowned.

In the medicine residency program, we are very proud of our camaraderie. The culture of the hospital is warm and friendly, and we look for candidates who would fit well into this environment.  Residency is a busy and stressful time so it helps to have colleagues who are in it together.

If you are applying for a medicine residency position, we would be happy to hear from you.

Joseph E. Parrillo, M.D.
Professor of Medicine, RWJ/UMDNJ
Chief, Department of Medicine
